With the 2022/23 school year now in full swing it is important to be aware of Ontario student transportation services new school bus lighting system updates. Starting July 1st, 2022, all school buses manufactured after 2005 will be equipped with a set four new overhead amber lights signal to accompany the four pre-existing red flashing lights signal and school bus’s stop arm system.

Prior to July 1st, 2022, school buses had red lights flashing only. These were to indicate the school bus stops when loading or unloading students and drivers approaching behind or coming in the opposite direction must stop at least 20 meters away from the bus. The new system of amber lights flashing will act as a precursor to the flashing red lights indicating the school bus is preparing to stop and drivers approaching behind or coming in the opposite direction must also prepare for a complete stop to keep students safe.
