Many people don’t realize that traffic violations, such as a speeding ticket or careless driving violation, can have a lot more consequences than just the initial fine. Penalties ranging from license suspensions and increased insurance premiums are just some of the potential consequences.
These additional penalties can be especially damaging for novice drivers who are subject to “escalated sanctions” for offences that carry 4 or greater demerit point penalties. If you’re facing traffic charges, it’s important to be aware of all the potential consequences before pleading guilty. Otherwise, you could end up paying a lot more than just the initial fine.
Have you received a traffic ticket in Kitchener, Waterloo or Cambridge?
The Waterloo Region is patrolled by two police forces: the Waterloo Regional Police Service (WRPS) and the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP). From intersecting highways to gravel roads, driving conditions in Kitchener can be as diverse as the population.
There are approximately 40 roundabouts in the Waterloo region, and the road speeds vary from 30 km/hr to 90 km/hr. It can be a very different driving experience every time you get in your vehicle, so it’s no surprise that there were more than 40,000 driving related tickets issued in the Waterloo region in 2021.
What types of traffic tickets do the WRPS and OPP issue?
The WRPS’s STEP program (Selective Traffic Enforcement Program), a complaint-based patrol for speeders and other violations, yields a large portion of the traffic tickets issued in the Region. It is also common to see the WRPS vehicles doing random speed traps on local roads. You will also see the OPP patrolling the expressway and 401 in the Waterloo Region.
There were more than 4,500 speeding tickets issued in 2021 alone in the Region. With both enforcement agencies focusing on the “Fatal Four” offences, there are an abundance of Speeding, Stunt Driving/Racing, Careless Driving, Distracted Driving and Fail to Wear Seatbelt tickets issued every year, along with turning charges, non-moving violations, etc.

What should I do if I am pulled over for a traffic violation in Kitchener?
-
Pull your vehicle safely over to the right or off the road completely. If you are in the left lane, signal and move to the right side of the road.
-
Be polite with the officer at the side of the road. You can defend yourself in court if desired/necessary at a later date. The side of the road is not the time to argue.
-
Remain silent. You do not have to give the officer any evidence that will then be used against you in court later on.
