I understand that you’ve been charged with a traffic ticket here in Ontario and you’re wondering what to do about it, and then if you did something about it and hired someone and paid them to do the work, is that work guaranteed? Ultimately, the question then is, can a paralegal guarantee a traffic ticket dismissal or a win?

It is a good question. It’s a valid question. I have been practicing for approximately 40 years. It’s gonna come into any one of my offices at least two or three times a day. The answer is a complicated one. The answer is basically no. You cannot promise or guarantee the outcome of events in a courtroom.

There’s a reason for that. It’s a subjective system. No one really knows ultimately what the end result will be, and certainly any licensed member of the law society in Ontario, both paralegals and lawyers, cannot guarantee the outcome for anyone in Ontario. I personally believe there’s a good reason for doing that.

If you were to promise or guarantee, or if I were to promise and guarantee that if you pay me this is going to simply go away, I know to a moral certainty that that’s not true. It might. We’re very successful, arguably one of the most successful companies that do this work here in Ontario, but I cannot promise or guarantee. I don’t.

I can look at a file and I can be confident because I think we have a strong defense, or I know the law’s changed and we can use that to our advantage, but the reality is, I think if anyone were guaranteeing you out here doing what I do, I would get very suspicious. A, it’s illegal and I would think right away someone is trying to simply get your money and I would start to ask some more questions about that.

I don’t promise or guarantee. anything at the firm, no one ever has. That’s not been our shtick. That’s not how we do business. And we are very successful in being very frank, very honest and very hardworking to get exceptional results. And that’s what we’ve provided for many years. Now, I would suggest one of the things you want to take from this particular video, I’m just simply trying to take the time with you to go Look, don’t be fueled by people promising or guaranteeing.

If you see one and it looks like it’s a wonderful guarantee and this is gonna make sense for you, take the time to read the fine print. Take the time to consult with the Law Society of Ontario on their standards on when this should and should not happen.
